My Mother is Trolling This Site

Published by under Uncategorized

My mom lives in a tiny town. I saw this tiny town on my site statistics. I was excited because my mom came to my website. This is how the conversation went when I spoke to her a day later:

Poppy: Hi Mom! I see you went to my website!
Mother: Uh…
(awkward silence)
Poppy: Ma?
Mother: How did you know that?
Poppy: I have a thing where I can see where people are from on my website.
Mother: Oh, I have to get off the phone now I have another call coming in- bye.

Yah, isn’t that strange?

Two Books I Could Not Finish

Published by Poppy under Uncategorized

American Nerd: The Story of My People
Sounds like it would be pretty interesting, doesn’t it? I thought so too, but unfortunately the author thinks the only female Nerd in America was Lisa Loopner. Not to disparage Lisa, I love Lisa and highly identified with her while growing up. However, this book really just goes through the history of nerds… and spends way to much time in the 40s, 50s and 60s searching for the first images and use of the word. I was hoping more to read about current nerd culture. I gave up just shy of 3 chapters to the end.

Narrow Dog to Carcassonne
For several reasons I was excited to find this book. I have been really enjoying memoirs lately. I have a good friend who has been spending all of summer 2008 on a longboat in England.
Alas, I have been proven to be a total moron because I cannot comprehend what the hell the author is talking about most of the time. And I have tried.
Example from page 7:
In Stone I fastened him (his dog) outside the supermarket. When I returned he was in the arms of an old man in a cloth cap. Both were crying softly. I crept away. I came back and a crowd had gathered. In the middle lay Jim (the dog), pretending to be dead. Was this your dog? asked a lady. On the boat I opened a pack of pork scratchings. Jim manifested himself at my knee. He sat down- Please can I have a scratching? Then he lay down- Please can I have a scratching? Then he rolled on his back and waved his legs in the air- Please please can I have a scratching? Then he sat up and looked straight at me- What do you want me to do- sing ‘Moon Fucking River’? A cathedral of oaks to Fradley, and we moored at the end of the nave.”

Ugh. Yah. Hahahahahah. That was so funny I forgot to laugh. Besides, what the kettle o fish are you fucking talking about? I gave up on the book by page 49, desperate though I was to have something read.

The Stork Has Come Again!

Look at what the stork brought Iris and I! Can you beleive it? We were totally caught by surprise on this one but we are so happy to have her join our family, nonetheless.

A very brave and wise young lady brought us this rabbit because she was unable to care for her any longer. I think it was very adult and courageous to admit her shortcomings and ask for help.

Immediately, we gave Ms. Alice McRabbit a nice warm bath, removing a lot of urine from the lower part of her body and belly. We also gave her a nice nutritious meal and some long needed water. She was so excited and we had to limit the food. We over-did it a bit and gave her vegetables and berry puffs. (She had a little upset stomach the next day), so we went back to the rabbit food and just frequent small amounts. Unlimited water, though! She drank a ton and it seemed to be running right through her.

We noticed her calm and gentle nature right away. She hops around and her gigantic ears are standing straight up at attention all the time. She looks eager and ready to play all the time.

We took her for a mani/pedi and she was very compliant. She has already started to fill in. You can’t feel all of her bones anymore. Her ribs aren’t protruding quite as much and her rear pelvis bones aren’t quite so pokey. Also- her personality is really coming out.

We bought her a giant new cage, which she hops around gleefully from end to end. She is definitely a house rabbit. She comes out and hops around the living room, and hops back into the cage to go potty. She seems to think she is one of the dogs, following them around. They seem to think she is a “different kind” of puppy.

I hope we have many happy years with Alice, and although we thought our family growing was done- we are so happy to have her!

Things I Love

Published by Poppy under Uncategorized

Art Quilts! I found this beautiful quilt called “Lightning Bugs” by Kate Themel just by browsing around on the internet the other evening. I love art quilts and would really like to try to do it one day. It turns out Ms. Themel is an amazing artist and cancer survivor, who allowed cancer to transform her life for the better.

Diviaks! This is a type of wild boar and I just think they are the cutest, plumpest, spunkiest looking baby wabies and I hope one day to wake up and find one grazing in my backyard, perhaps eating the azaleas, and it looks at me tentatively but lets me slowly approach it. It realizes psychically that it is my dream animal and we were meant to be together, so it lets me gently reach out and pet it. Then I give it a giant bucket of cold water because the flowers made him thirsty. I ask him his name and he says “I am Mr. Shitori, may I poop in your flower bed?” and I say “of yes, of course, I would be honored to have your poop in my flowers.

Contour Farming! Isn’t this beautiful? The reason I know about this is that I just watched a special on the American Dust Bowl of the 1930’s- the largest manmade environmental disaster, (I think). Anyway, the solution for the problem was to fix the earth that was wrecked by tearing out all the vegetation and for new solutions for agriculture, namely contour farming. Okay, so I know shit about farming to be honest with you but this is so beautiful. I didn’t know it existed, but I have seen crops that look like this from airplanes before and now I know their purpose. They farm according to the contour of the land, allowing for hydration and protection of our environment.

Thursday Product Review: Gorilla Glue

Published by Poppy under Thursday Product Review

about $4 at JoAnn Fabrics

This stuff is really great. I previously thought the best glue in the world was my “mosaic glue” that I use for making mosaic art. However, this stuff is really great because you can use just a tiny bit of it from a regular glue container. It actually does hold everything. I have tried it on a few things, and am currently using it to glue the clay feet on my vinyl record bowls.

It hardens really quickly- but you really do need just a tiny bit, (it expands as it dries). It becomes hard as nails and really holds.

I’m happy to have found it, and will make sure to keep it on hand in my house for just general use!
